Hero's Harem Guild
This week, I'll be reviewing another game I have experience with in the past. This game feels like it falls somewhere between Visual Novel and Point and Click Adventure, but it definitely leans more towards VN. Normally, when I try VN's, they end up being poorly written, uninteresting, and are really just sex scenes linked together with whatever excuse of a story they could come up with in 5 minutes. The result often feels like those poorly written porn movies that are a few terribly acted scenes that lead into a forced feeling sex scene. But that's what makes this game that much more special. Welcome to Hero's Harem Guild.
So just to preface this, the game is in alpha and is only finished up to the end of the prologue. But the game is massive for just what it is. I already know the game and had to start over to get the screenshots due to losing a lot of my pre-work, and I've barely scratched the surface of the story at this point. The gameplay is mainly your standard fare of going through story, but where most VN's often chug along and offer you a choice once in a while, this one tosses that out the window. Once you clear the "prologue" of the prologue, you've become a hero in a town and it's up to you to decide what you do and how you do it. You'll wander around, collecting items, meeting characters, and doing quests.
Throughout the game, you'll become invested in the characters, each with their own histories, backstories, and reasons for acting a way that they do. Each girl who joins will also have their own goals and obstacles that you can help them overcome. Now, the big aspect of the game is money and you've got a myriad of ways to obtain it, from quests you can pick up, collecting and selling items, fishing, or even using the Job Board to assign members of your guild to work where they can get money or items.
That said, there are a few issues I have but are often very minor. Mainly, some dialogue is full of grammatical errors and misspellings and some scenes have notable clipping errors like a girls arm going straight through her own breast. But the game is still in Alpha and has a very active community on Discord, so I'm sure it'll get fixed over time. And while I'm not entirely sure on all the music, I do know that one particular scene ripped off music from RWBY, having the song "Caffeine". It may just be placeholder (and honestly, does fit the scene very well), but I figured I'd add that in here as well.
As far as graphics and story are concerned, the game does very well, the visual style is still, yet animated at the same time so it's got some life to it and the story is well written (just needs some editing touch-ups) and when you're looking for a VN, those are the two big elements that make or break a game. The game is definitely worth checking out. You'll laugh at chickens faster than a speeding arrow, you'll cry when characters reveal a dark part of their history, you'll seek out the mysteries and wonder why certain things happen at certain moments. The game is big for just a "prologue" and you'll definitely not regret giving this one a shot.
